The NFL has decided to do something very smart. They used to have the draft at Radio City Music Hall in New York City every year. However, they finally realized that having it in the same location year after year is boring to their fans. They have now decided to have the draft in different NFL cities. Philadelphia hosted the NFL draft in 2017. A new bid was just submitted to the NFL regarding the hosting of the NFL draft in either 2019 or 2020. The bid was jointly submitted by the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the Cleveland Browns.

It makes sense that the NFL draft should take place in northeast Ohio. After all, the Hall of Fame is there for a reason. This is the birthplace of football. Contrary to popular belief, football was not created in Texas. Therefore, having the draft happen somewhere within close proximity to the Pro Football Hall of Fame would be a great idea. The Browns are also a franchise with a storied history. Jim Brown played his entire career with the Browns and is considered by many to be the greatest player in the history of the sport. Unfortunately, the past 27 years have not been kind to the Browns. The team has become a laughingstock and is often referred to as the worst team in professional sports. Therefore, the NFL might not want to have their biggest day of the year associated with a team that has been irrelevant for the better part of three decades.

The Browns and the Hall of Fame did not place the only bid to host the draft in 2019 and 2020. Bids for both of those years were also submitted by the Green Bay Packers. This is a formidable threat because Green Bay is a legendary franchise. Vince Lombardi is considered by many to be the greatest coach of all time. The Super Bowl trophy is named after him. Since both the Browns and the Packers placed bids for 2019 and 2010, logic would dictate that each of them will get a chance to host the NFL draft. However, that has not been officially decided on yet. There is no timetable for when a decision will be made for the draft location for either of those years.

It is unclear what information was in the bid that was submitted by the Browns and the Hall of Fame. It is common for parties to keep their submissions a secret so the cities they are competing with will not know what they are up against. It seems like that is the case with Cleveland as well. The stigma of the Browns being a terribly mismanaged and losing organization will definitely not help their chances of being selected by the NFL. It is likely the reason why the team has never been featured on the HBO program “Hard Knocks.” It will be interesting to see if the NFL will be able to look past the ineptitude of the current Browns and focus on their history.
