Marco Antonio Marques da Silva Releases New Book On Human Dignity

The plethora of texts available in the legal profession can sometimes make it difficult to find new entrants into the field. This is the case in many countries across the world but can be even more pronounced in those with large populations that contain many legal scholars, such as Brazil. One book to be released soon deserves plenty of attention not just for the topics it covers but for some of the notable contributors that have brought it to fruition. One of the primary contributors, in this case, being Judge Marco Antonio Marques da Silva. His recent book, titled “Luso-Brazilian Treaty on Human Dignity”, has not only caught the attention of many in the field but has also earned him official honors by the University of Lisbon Faculty of Law.

Career at a Glance

Before examining the honors he recently received, it is informative to take a look at the long career of Marco Antonio Marques da Silva to gain a fuller appreciation of his expertise. Born in Itapetininga in 1958, he had already settled on pursuing a career in law by the age of fifteen. This desire led him to Pontifical Catholic University, where he studied law and graduated in 1981. Though he would later pursue both a masters degree and doctorate from the university, by the year after his graduation he was already staffed as a professor for the school. He would eventually achieve tenure at the university in 2003.

Marco’s official start in the legal profession came in 1983 when he became a member of the state judiciary. This role would see him execute his duties in many different locations, operating in the counties of Paleira D’Oeste, Monte Alto, Diadema, and São Paulo. In 2002 he would be promoted to a more prominent role as a substitute judge. Following a 2005 fellowship at the Faculty of Law in Coimbra, he would be named as a judge for the Court of Appeals.

Recognition

Through a career characterized by recognition and achievements, Marco Antonio Marques da Silva has shown enviable dedication to law and hard work. The most recent manifestation of this is the release of his upcoming book, which has earned him recognition by the University of Lisbon Faculty of Law. In acknowledgment of the achievement represented by the text, the school awarded him the Special Distinction of the University of Lisboa, presented by Rector António Sampaio da Nóvoa. He was also awarded the Medal of Honor of the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon by the President of the Board of Directors, professor Eduardo Vera-Cruz Pinto, and professor Jorge Miranda.

These honors were bestowed for two reasons. The first was in acknowledgment of his many years of work as an educator. The second was an acknowledgment of his commitment to Luso-Brazilian legal cooperation, a topic which has long occupied his attention. The honors were approved by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon. The council voted unanimously in favor of bestowing the two honors on Marco.

Book Examined

The book around which the awards were centered is a well-founded text on human dignity and how it relates to Luso-Brazilian issues. It utilizes an interdisciplinary approach in order to avail itself of a diversity of opinion and specialization. The book delves into discussions of fundamental human rights including citizenship, consumer rights, democracy, fair and equitable legal processes, environmental rights, as well as others.

The book is the result of a joint effort between the Brazilian Academy of Criminal Law and the Faculty of Law of the University of Lisbon. There were a vast number of participants who helped usher in the book from inception to fruition. These included over one hundred legal specialists, of which eighty were Brazilian and the remainder were Portuguese. The coordinators for the book are professors Jorge Miranda and Marco Antonio Marques da Silva.

The event drew many members from across the legal field. These included the president and two vice presidents of the Portuguese Supreme Court of Justice as well as the president of the Lisbon Court of Appeals. Other notable attendees from the realm of government included the Brazilian Ambassador to Portugal, the Deputy Attorney General of the Republic, and a representative for the Prime Minister’s office. Given the academic nature of the awards and the Judge’s body of work, representatives from the field of higher education were also in attendance. These included the President of the University of Lisbon, as well as the Dean of the Faculty of Law and numerous professors.

Court of Appeals

Since much of his work outside of Academia stems from his capacity as a Judge for the Brazilian Court of Appeals in São Paulo, it may be informative to take a moment to examine a bit of the history of the court. The São Paulo Court of Appeals was founded on February 3, 1874. At its founding, it was originally referred to as the Court of Appeals of São Paulo and Paraná. Since these were smaller provinces, only seven judges were appointed to serve on the court in the beginning (Ideamensch). In fact, the court’s beginnings were so humble that it was originally located exclusively in a collection of houses throughout the center of the city of São Paulo. This was despite the fact that the court had a role in judging a wide variety of cases. In the present day, the role of the court is highly respected and not only has it moved to a more stately location, but many resources are expended in order to ensure the fair and expedited delivery of its decisions.

With a commitment to work that has followed him through his time as a student, to an educator, and now to a judge, Marco Antonio Marques da Silva has earned accolades wherever he has gone. These most recent awards in acknowledgment of his literary accomplishments, as well as his work as a professor, are just the latest recognition for his career’s large body of work. An examination of the judge’s life and work is an informative peek into the world of Brazilian law, politics, and education.
