The Chinese may be Donald Trump’s worst nightmare when it comes to the trade deficit. But the Chinese just introduced an AI virtual news anchor at the Fifth World Internet Expo. That development opens another can of worms for Trump. The last thing Trump needs is American AI news reporters reporting fake news. And another last thing Trump needs is an AI news anchor reporting fake news. Plus, there’s no proof AI reporters will give him the respect he demands as president.

But these Chinese AI reporters do mimic the real Chinese news reporters right down to the way they comb their hair and the way they make facial expressions.

The AI news anchor introduced at the expo is the handy work of Sogou Inc. and Xinhua, the state news agency. This particular alien news reporter wore a red tie with his black suit just like the tie and suit worn by the Chinese reporter, Qiu Hao. The Chinese want to promote the advancements in artificial intelligence as well as the progress they achieved in surveillance equipment at this year’s expo. The expo also showcases Chinese advancements in driverless automobile technology.

The Internet Expo is China’s premier tech event, but this year’s event doesn’t have the glam and glitter of past expos thanks to Trump’s trade war with China. This new battle for web dominance continues to push China’s tech entrepreneurs to go a step further and develop technology that puts the United States on notice. The Chinese want to prove they are the kings of the tech world. But United States corporations say the Chinese are stealing their trade secrets, and that helps them stay competitive in the tech market.

The artificial intelligence news reporter doesn’t have a real job in China yet. But at the expo, this news reading clone drew large crowds and lots of comments.

Facebook and Google are not welcome in China so the government wants to establish their own social media sites that mimic those companies. And according to the United States, they steal the technology that makes social media companies in America so successful. The Chinese deny that claim. China tech companies can do what U.S. companies can do, according to government officials. In fact, the Chinese say American entrepreneurs copy them. But there’s no proof U.S. tech companies steal secrets from China. China doesn’t innovate; it duplicates, according to U.S. officials.
