Double-dipping is a habit that many people have. People double-dip because they do not think that it is harmful. However, science has stated that this habit is actually unhygienic.
Paul Dawson is a food expert. He is also the author of a book entitled “Did I Just Eat That?” He did an experiment to show how gross this habit is. He tested crackers, chocolate dip, salsa and cheese dip. He tested how much bacteria is on the surface of food after one bite.
He found that there were 1,000 more bacteria per milliliter in the dip when you double-dip. He stated that this is a significant amount of bacteria. He said that it is equivalent to the amount of bacteria that is transferred from colds and foodborne illnesses.
Double-dipping was a topic on the popular 90s television show “Seinfield.” George Costanza was caught double-dipping. The accuser stated that double-dipping is the equivalent of putting the whole chip in your mouth.
Cathy Moir is a CSIRO food specialist. She stated that even though double-dipping is a bad practice, it is not the worst thing that you can do. She stated that if you double-dip, then any of the germs that are in your mouth can end up in someone else’s mouth. This means that you can potentially spread things like colds, flu and other illnesses by double-dipping. However, she stated that going to the bathroom without washing your hands is much worse than double-dipping.
The five-second rule is another habit that people have. It is more sanitary than double-dipping. Most floors do not have dangerous bacteria on them. Additionally, if you drop food on carpet, then your chance of coming in contact with dangerous bacteria is even lower. Most of the dangerous bacteria is absorbed by the fibers in the carpet.
