Area 51 is a United States federal government facility that is overseen and operated by the United States Air Force. You’ve had to have heard things about Area 51 in pop culture, news media, and via word of mouth, talks that have all been spread due to the highly classified nature of the facility.

There are countless federal agents who guard entry to Area 51 who are assigned to guard the entirety of its perimeter, making sure nobody gets too close to what’s going on at the U.S. Air Force facility. This isn’t a secret, either – the American public has long known that Area 51 is guarded extensively against unwanted, unauthorized visitors.

These conditions are what make the “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us” Facebook event that much more of a meme that seemingly the entire American public can enjoy.

If you’re not already familiar with the meme, Internet user Matty Roberts created the event as nothing more than a joke on June 27 of this year. Shortly after Roberts created the Facebook event, swarms of the social media platform’s users became interested in it, with a total of two-plus million people having interacted with the event by stating that they plan on going to the event, whereas another 1.5 million Facebook users have claimed that they’re “interested” in the event.

Facebook users were drawn to the event after it was mentioned on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast, the most popular podcast across all of the United States.

Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us is planned to take place on Sept. 20, 2019, roughly one month from now. Even though it was started as a joke – not to mention the fact that the overwhelming majority of Americans do, in fact, think the event isn’t legitimate – local officials who work for the government of rural Lincoln County, Nevada, signed an emergency declaration to prepare for the event in case many thousands of participants actually show up and attempt to carry out the raid. Lincoln County officials made this decision earlier today, on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2019.

Earlier this week, the four-member board of directors of Lincoln County agreed unanimously to approve the emergency declaration.

The county seat of Lincoln County is the small town of Rachel, which self-identifies as the “UFO Capital of the World.” Rachel is also home to Nevada State Route 375, which was officially named the “Extraterrestrial Highway” in 1996.
