Is Nanowood the Styrophome of the Future?

Researchers at the Univeristy of Maryland have been able to synthesize a styrophome-like insulation from wood. The new product functions similarly to styrophome, but has many beneficial qualities. The researchers are calling their product “nanowood”.

Nanowood can be manufactured from normal wood. The process of creating nanowood involves removing the lignins from the wood. Lignins are organic polymers, which make wood dark and inflexible. Some short fibers are also removed in the process.

The resulting nanowood is a promising insulator. It can protect against thermal changes as well as sunlight. In fact, the nanowood is able to block at least 10 degrees more heat than styrophome or silica aerogel. This makes it one of the best insulators created yet.

The nanowood is also considerably strong. In one test, the researchers found that nanowood was 30 times stronger than other insulation materials used commercially. This functional strength adds to its commercial viability as a construction material.

It also does not cause adverse allergic reactions like the particles from commonly-used insulation materials. Materials like glass or wool insulation can often become lung irritants if inhaled. In addition to health concerns, this also requires the use of respirators by installation teams.

Perhaps most importantly, nanowood is biodegradable. This product can be used widely without fear of significant waste. It won’t sit in landfills for years like other similar-functioning products.

Styrophome is notoriously bad for the environment. It is commonly found in oceans, rivers, and landfills. Styrophome does not decompose readily for hundreds of years. The use of styrophome and other common insulation materials is unfortunately unsustainable.

The research team at the University of Maryland is developing different products for green and sustainable housing. They have been able to manufacture nanowood in different forms like rolls, chains, and blocks. The team is commercially marketing these and other products through a spin-off company Inventwood.

The production of nanowood is promising for the future of housing development and other industries. The increasing emphasis on sustainability in building materials will hopefully continue to drive change. Nanowood might be as common as styrophome in the future.
