The year 2018 has so far been a great year for romantic comedies. Just look at the success of movies like Set it Up, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, The Kissing Booth, and Crazy Rich Asians. And it seems like next year is not going to be any different. Rebel Wilson’s upcoming movie Isn’t it Romantic’s trailer just dropped in and it looks fantastic. The trailer is striking similar shades to this year’s earlier I Feel pretty, starring Amy Schumer.

Rebel Wilson plays the role of a young woman who has become cynical with love, only to find herself confined in a romantic comedy. Although the movie isn’t due to release until February next year, the recently released trailer makes it look quite harmless and has quickly called out its own gay stereotypes within the plot before anyone gets too annoyed. While Isn’t it Romantic is a spot-on storybook romance, it is a rom-com about being trapped in clichéd romantic comedy.

Premise

There is an alternate magical reality, a place where apartments are always huge, New York City hardly smells of garbage, and a place where most romantic comedies are set. It’s a pleasing land filled with impromptu musical numbers and comic misunderstandings, where everyone works either as an architect or a magazine editor. The upcoming rom-com Isn’t it Romantic is a return to that world.

The movie follows the NYC-based Australian architect Natalie, played by Rebel Wilson. All her life, she has worked hard to get noticed at her workplace. However, she is more likely to be asked to deliver bagels and coffee than to design the city’s next skyscraper. Therefore, for a long time, Natalie had always assumed that what she has seen in rom-coms is all a fantasy. To add more salt to the wound, Natalie, who does not believe in love, suffers a horrible face off with a robber, resulting in Natalie losing her consciousness.

After hitting her head and getting knocked out in a subway station, she wakes up, only to find NYC streets to be super clean and her apartment to be tidy and big. Not only is she self-aware of her existence, but also after being completely pessimistic above love in her entire life, she finds herself trapped in her own romantic comedy. Oh, and she can’t curse anymore as well.

The First Trailer

The first trailer is already out and it shows young Natalie (Rebel Wilson) watching Pretty Woman, while her mother tells her that love is not a fairy tale. The lady goes on to add that girls like them just don’t get that. Fast forward 25 years later, Natalie, still mocking how bad rom-coms are, is told by her friend to change her view and be a little more open about people. However, while following suit, she is robbed and knocked out, waking up in a beauty-filtered world.

The Leading Lady; Rebel Wilson

Rebel WIlson in new film Isn't it RomanticRebel Wilson is headlining the movie, same as Bobcat Goldthwait led Hot to Trot after serving a few Warner Bros as the MVP. Isn’t it Romantic is also a Warner Bros comedy and we hope that it works out better for Rebel than Hot the Trot did for poor Goldthwait, who went ahead to become one of the most productive and exciting indie filmmakers of cinema. In this movie, she would be starring as Natalie, who is an architect from New York.

Lead Ms. Wilson was born in March 1980 in Sydney, Australia. She started off her career by filming in a few comedy series in Australia, including Bogan Pride, Pizza, City Homicide, and The Wedge. Shortly after moving to the US, she made her name with an unforgettable role in Bride’s Maid, playing as Kristen Wiig’s roommate. She later starred in one of the few romantic comedies released in recent years; How To Be Single. She also served as the leading lady in smash hit Pitch Perfect and two of its blockbuster sequels.

The Remaining Cast

Coupled with Rebel Wilson, there are other characters as well who might fill more colors in the movie. The stars appearing in this upcoming rom-com sensation are:

  • Adam DeVine: The actor is once again coming back to co-star with Wilson. In this reunion, DeVine would star as Natalie’s best friend and one of the two interests in her life.
  • Liam Hemsworth: The star also steps in to play Blake, who is a client of Natalie and the second love interest in her life.
  • Priyanka Chopra: The film also features Priyanka Chopra as Isabella, who is a yoga ambassador.

Along with the Ms. Chopra, you will also see Betty Gilpin, Tom Ellis, and Jennifer Saunders, as Natalie’s assistant, neighbor and gay sidekick, and mother respectively.

Behind the Scenes

This fantasy comedy was written by Paula Pell, Erin Cardillo, Dana Fox & Katie Silberman. The production team had services of Grant Scharbo and Gina Mathews. Shooting for the movie was largely conducted in New York City and areas that surround it, giving it a more authentic touch.

Additionally, earlier last year, Todd Strauss-Schulson was also hired to direct the film titled Isn’t it Romantic. While directing, Todd described the movie as: “It’s a romantic comedy about falling in love with yourself. And it’s a romantic comedy about romantic comedies and the romantic stories we tell ourselves.”

Although the guest stars, music, and the plot are enough to get the fans excited, it’s the fact that Rebel landed the starring role that deserves a celebration. In an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres show, she thrillingly shared, “I had such a ball filming that.” You would also be happy to know that Ms. Wilson plans on filming another musical film within the next twelve months and has asked her fans to remain positive for seeing more of her singing. Cheers!
