Kurt Weiss Greenhouses is a company whose origins go back to 1900. Otto Muller emigrated to the United States from Germany that year. It was a partnership between him and other individuals in Astoria Queens, New York. He later relocated to Whitestone, where a large number of other greenhouse operations were located. The partnership dissolved in 1910 but the company remained in Whitestone until the 1960s.

In 1929, Otto Muller purchased a facility in East Meadow. His son-in-law, Kurt Weiss, and grandson, Russell Weiss, fixed up this location. It was developed into Kurt Weiss Florist in 1960. This location was sold to AT&T in 1972 who began using it as a satellite communication center. Around the same time, Kurt Weiss suffered serious injuries in a car accident and was no longer able to work.

Kurt Weiss Greenhouses was relocated to Center Moriches on Long Island. In the 1970s, the florist industry began to change. Instead of retail flower shops, business shifted to grocery stores and wholesale distributors. Russell Weiss responded by buying two companies, Daurenheim Inc. and Dupuy Greenhouses. This gave his company the size to effectively compete.

By 1980, Kurt Weiss Greenhouses had $5 million in annual revenues. Its total production area covered over one million square feet. Russell Weiss began expanding outside of New York in the middle of the 1980s. He built operations along the east coast. Each location grows different plants depending on which ones grow best in that each environment. The facilities are located in a diverse geographic area which enables this company to offer many types of plants.

They have now sold millions of plants. They can offer plants year-round due to mastering the science of turning crops. They only grow high-quality plants that people will be very pleased with. They have plants grown from the best genetics in the world.

One of their most popular lines is the Patio Paradis Plant Collection. These plants love the summer, partly sunny conditions, and a moderate amount of water. Kurt Weiss Greenhouses also produces beautiful Hydrangeas. They have been growing these plants almost since the company started. Another popular choice is Ace of Hearts Anthurium. This is a tropical plant that does well as an indoor houseplant.

One of their newest plants is the Basil Tree. This is a tiny tree that grows micro-herbs on it. It is always producing new leaves so it can be harvested to fit all culinary specialties. Basil is used in many country’s cuisines due to its versatility and the depth and flavor it adds to dishes.
