How Dinosaurs Became Extinct

Scientists believe that Dinosaurs ruled planet earth for approximately 160 million years. However, their dynasty came crashing nearly 66 million years ago. Scientists say that they became extinct when their habit was destroyed by an asteroid. They used to live in Yucata Peninsula in Mexico, and this is the place that was destroyed by the asteroid. Today, Yucata Peninsula is known as Chicxulub crater. This is what resulted in the emergence of mammals as well as humans. Before, mammals and humans found it difficult to survive on earth because of the threat posed by Dinosaurs. A new study has revealed that if the extraterrestrial impact happened elsewhere, the Dinosaurs would have survived. For instance, should have the asteroid hit the ocean or in mid-continent, a total annihilation would have been avoided. The study that was published in the Journal of Scientific Reports yesterday explained that ingredients that were capable of causing the extinction were found in 13 percent of the earth’s surface. Tohoku University paleontologist Kunio Kaiho said that he thought that the creatures could still be alive today. He was responding to an email that had been addressed to him by the New York Times. However, these findings have been questioned by other researchers.

For instance, the opposing scientists said that the asteroid had the size of Manhattan. When the object hit the coast of Mexico, they argue that the hydrocarbons and the sulfur in the region could have caused an explosion that was capable of blotting the sun. At the same time, the catastrophic effects of the climate were capable of changing the climate. Also, this would have interfered with earth’s ecosystems and thus an extinction of three-quarters of the earth’s species. The scientists who carried out the research said that not all areas on earth had the same amount of Sulphur and hydrocarbons. This means that should have the object hit these areas, less soot would have been released into the atmosphere. This would have eventually resulted in a smaller cooling effect. To understand how the event occurred, a senior researcher at Meteorological Research Institute in Japan known as Naga Oshima created a small model of how the phenomena played out. Some of these places which didn’t have enough hydrocarbons and Sulphur made 87 percent of the world. They included places like Africa, Amazon, China, and India. However, the devastation would have been more serious if the asteroid hit the marine coastal areas that had a lot of algae.
