Continuing Investment of the Huntsville Community

Just this month, Barbara Stokes, CEO, and Scott Stokes, COO, of Green Structure Homes of Alabama, LLC or just GSH, a Huntsville-based Disaster Relief Construction Contractor said they had donated FEMA $50k worth of quality grade building materials to Habitat for Humanity of Madison County. The Madison County Habitat has been in the business of dream building since 1987 and has an established record of helping those in need of low cost housing within the county. Over the 31 of the non-profit’s existence, they have worked with 272 families to build 203 new homes and 65 homes rehabbed and sold to clients.

The building materials donated include a substantial amount of drywall and Hardie Fascia Board which will go towards the Habitat’s noteworthy efforts. Getting the materials to Habitat’s facility in Huntsville was no small task as GSH of Alabama’s manufacturing facility is in Huntsville. But GSH was up for the challenge as it utilized its in-house logistics network to transport four semi-truck loads of these FEMA building spec’d, brand new materials. GSH also has an in-house design and engineering team that Barbara works closely with to see her innovative ideas all the way from concept to production. “We are always looking for ways to continue to make our homes safer, more durable and more comfortable for their end users,” said Barbara Stokes.

GSH of Alabama is known within the disaster relief industry for being intuitive, down-home manufacturers of environmentally friendly, energy-efficient modular homes. And sure, these homes are safe, customizable and eco-friendly, but the real triumph of the homes that GSH of Alabama builds is that they can be ready in a moment’s notice. Quality and safety are of the utmost importance when manufacturing these hurricane-rated homes. Building these homes (not houses) is also a way for the Stokes to build up their community. “By providing homes to those affected by these recent disasters, we can support local business and accelerate job growth in the areas surrounding our manufacturing facilities.

When Hurricane Harvey devasted Texas and Louisiana last year, GSH of Alabama was ready. FEMA contracted with the Huntsville company to produce Performing on a $28 million awarded contract, GSH turned out production of manufactured homes to aid the rebuilding of the region. When that tall order first came in, Barbara Stokes drew from the strength of her family to provide housing for as many other families that she could. But helping crisis-stricken families is only part of what GSH is all about. The recent donation to Habitat for Humanity shows that the company also has a calling to give back to Madison County. “GSH is thrilled these materials are going to good use,” said Barbara J. Stokes, Chief Executive Officer. “Habitat for Humanity does excellent work here in the Huntsville area, and we are proud to help support their mission.”

Habitat of Madison provides affordable and decent housing to families freeing them from mental and physical hardship. They do this by providing quality housing, at-cost along with a affordable no interest mortgage or small loan that helps client invest in other areas of their lives. When donations like GSH are given to Habitat, the cost of construction is greatly reduced for the client. These donations mean quiet a bit to Habitat’s clients and their 10 full time employees working in construction, family services, finance, volunteer management and administration. County’s Construction Manager, Don Adams, commented “A large portion of the drywall donated by GSH of Alabama will be used to complete nine homes, and the remainder will be stored for future projects or sold in our ReStore to support Habitat for Humanity programs in Madison County.”

This is not GSH of Alabama’s first contribution to Habitat for Humanity of Madison County as the disaster relief company donated $75,000 worth of building materials this last June. The materials included 1600 sheets of Drywall, a truckload of Hardie Fascia, and over 58,000 square feet of Linoleum flooring. These contributions are hopefully just the beginning of a beautiful relationship between the two entities that is sure to enrich the people of Madison county.
